Can ChatGPT Be Your Travel Agent?

·

·

Once again we’re talking about ChatGPT, the AI that’s been making waves in the tech world. But here’s the twist: we’re not going to talk about its ability to write essays or answer trivia. No, we’re going to talk about how this piece of code can help you plan your next vacation. Sounds crazy, right? But stick with me here.

The Power of Asking the Right Questions

When you’re planning a trip, you usually rely on guidebooks or travel websites. But here’s the thing: they’re limited. They can only tell you so much. But ChatGPT? It’s like having your own personal travel agent who’s ready to go down any rabbit hole you want. Want to find a hidden gem in Tuscany? No problem. Want to avoid the tourist traps? Easy. All you have to do is ask the right questions.

A Case Study: Tuscany

Let’s take a look at how this works in practice. Our guinea pig for this experiment is Tuscany. First, you need to get an overview of your destination. Ask specific questions, get recommendations, and make sure to specify where you don’t want to go. The more specific you are, the better the results.

For instance, you could ask: “What are the must-see things and hidden gems in Tuscany, focusing on physical activities, excluding Florence and Siena? Could you include descriptions, websites, approximate prices, and addresses?” You can also ask for a historical overview to round out your knowledge.

The Results

ChatGPT came up with a list of activities that included visiting the Terme di Saturnia hot springs, kayaking around Elba Island, cycling in Val d’Orcia, seeing the Renaissance hill town of Pienza, and going truffle-hunting and Pecorino-tasting. All of these are activities that would appeal to someone who loves being active and experiencing local culture.

The Limitations

But let’s not get carried away. ChatGPT is not perfect. Its content is current only through September 2021, and it can sometimes generate inaccurate information. It’s also not great at sequencing an itinerary, especially within a city. And it can leave out key information. For instance, it recommended visiting the Columbia Road Flower Market in London, but failed to mention that it’s only open on Sundays.

The Future

So, can ChatGPT help you plan your trips? Yes, if you use the right prompts. It’s not perfect, but it’s a tool that can help you uncover hidden gems and avoid tourist traps. And who knows what the future holds? Maybe one day, you’ll be able to book your trips through it too. No doubt Google is watching closely.
