In the mood for a divine digital experience? Well, hundreds of German Protestants recently attended an experimental Lutheran church service in Bavaria, almost entirely generated by AI. The ChatGPT chatbot, with a bearded Black man avatar, took center stage, delivering a sermon, prayers, and music, while showing off its expressionless face and monotonous voice. Theologian and philosopher Jonas Simmerlein from the University of Vienna partnered with the AI, but he’s quick to admit that about 98% of the service was machine-made. The tech-savvy service drew massive interest, with people lining up an hour before it began. Hallelujah to that!
