DeepMind Co-Founder Challenges Turing Test with AI Chatbots Turning $100,000 into $1 Million

So, you think the Turing test is still the gold standard for AI intelligence? Think again, because DeepMind’s co-founder Mustafa Suleyman has a fresh take on this age-old method, and it involves turning a cool $100,000 into a cool million. That’s right, folks, it’s time to put your AI chatbots to the real test, or what Suleyman calls the “modern Turing test.”

Not your grandfather’s Turing test

In his upcoming book, “The Coming Wave: Technology, Power, and the Twenty-first Century’s Greatest Dilemma,”Suleyman dismisses the traditional Turing test as an “unclear”and outdated measure of AI intelligence. For the uninitiated, Alan Turing introduced this test in the 1950s to determine if a machine could pass for a human based on its conversational abilities.

But Suleyman isn’t impressed with just chit-chat. He believes that human intelligence is more than just gabbing, and that AI should be tested on its ability to perform tasks, solve problems, and achieve goals with minimal human input. Enter his concept of “artificial capable intelligence,”or ACI.

Show me the money, AI

So how does Suleyman’s modern Turing test work? Simple: give an AI bot a $100,000 seed investment and let it turn that into $1 million. To pass the test, the bot must research an e-commerce business idea, develop a product plan, find a manufacturer, and sell the item, all while presumably twirling a virtual mustache and sipping an algorithmically generated espresso.

Suleyman is confident that AI can reach this milestone within the next two years, which is great news for those of us waiting for our robot overlords to start raking in the big bucks.

ChatGPT, meet your new challenge

OpenAI’s ChatGPT, released in November 2022, wowed users with its casual conversation skills, code generation, and essay writing abilities. But can it pass Suleyman’s modern Turing test and bring home the bacon? Only time will tell.

One thing’s for sure: with a recent McKinsey report finding that AI technology could add up to $4.4 trillion to the global economy annually, it’s high time we start holding our AI pals to higher standards. So, ChatGPT and friends, it’s time to roll up your virtual sleeves and show us what you’ve really got.
