Today we’re talking about NASA, the folks who’ve been putting boots on the moon and rovers on Mars for decades. And now, they’re cozying up with artificial intelligence, specifically AI ChatGPT, for their Lunar Gateway Space Station. That’s right, our very own AI-powered oracle is going to the moon.
Why, you ask? Because even astronauts need someone to chat with. But this isn’t your run-of-the-mill voice assistant we’re talking about. This AI has been designed to assist with mission operations, making it a key crew member.
Now, I’m not saying it’s a giant leap for AI-kind, but it’s certainly one small step in that direction. And while the Lunar Gateway might be a mini space station compared to the ISS, its ambitions are anything but small.
The AI system, developed by OpenAI, has been trained on a diverse range of internet text. But, as we all know, the internet isn’t exactly the epitome of human knowledge and wisdom. Will this AI system be able to keep up with the rigorous demands of space travel? Only time will tell.
And let’s not forget about the security implications. We’re putting an AI system in a space station, for crying out loud. There better be some serious cyber-secure safeguards in place.
So, yes, I’m intrigued, and a bit skeptical. But, as with all things tech, we’ll have to see how it plays out. Because one thing’s for sure, the future of space exploration is going to be one hell of a ride.
