The AI Job Hunt
I’m sure we’ve all had that dream. The one where we wake up, stretch, and then send our personal AI off to work for us. Well, we’re not quite there yet. But, AI can at least help us land a job we like.
The Resume Game
Resumes and cover letters, love them or hate them, they’re still a big part of the job application process. And guess what? Employers have been using AI to sift through these documents for years. But now, the tables are turning. With the latest advances in generative AI, job seekers can use AI tools to give themselves an edge.
The Experiment
I decided to put this to the test. I found a real job ad on LinkedIn for a remote Software Engineer position at Meta (you know, the company formerly known as Facebook). The role required coding experience, a knack for building large-scale applications, and a degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
To make things interesting, I created a fictional character, Tamsin Smith, a Stanford grad with a background in software engineering at Google. If that’s not enough to impress Mark Zuckerberg, she also leads a local scouting group in her free time.
With a job ad and a character profile in hand, I was ready to test out some AI tools.
The Tools
I tried out several AI tools, including Rezi.ai, Resumaker.ai, Tealhq.com, Kickresume.com, and even OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Each tool had its strengths and weaknesses, and none of them produced a perfect resume or cover letter. But they all offered some level of assistance, whether it was generating bullet points, formatting the document, or even writing a summary section.
The Verdict
So, what’s the takeaway? Well, AI can certainly help with the job application process. But it’s not a magic bullet. You still need to put in the work, add your personal touch, and make sure the final product represents you accurately and professionally.
The Takeaway
Two sites stand out. Kickresume.com and ChatGPT were the ones producing the most usable writeups.
And remember, while AI can help you land an interview, it can’t do the interview for you. At least, not yet.
