CIOs Must Develop Policies for ChatGPT Use in Hospitals and Health Systems

The buzzword of the decade, artificial intelligence, or AI for those trying to save on their word count. And the latest showstopper? None other than ChatGPT. It’s like that new kid on the block that everyone can’t stop talking about, except this kid can mimic human conversation and write essays. Neat, right?

So, the question on everybody’s lips, or fingertips, is: Should hospitals start laying down the law when it comes to ChatGPT? Let’s hear from the tech bigwigs themselves.

First up, we have Robert Eardley from University Hospitals. In his view, AI like ChatGPT needs a leash, a governance process, if you will. Drafted responses from these AIs should get a human thumbs up before going live. And any AI shenanigans happening in the organization? Keep tabs on them. Don’t let the AI bots run amok.

Next in line is Darrell Bodnar from North Country Healthcare. His take? CIOs should step up to the plate and establish some ground rules for using ChatGPT and its AI brethren. North Country Healthcare, for one, is ahead of the curve, having drawn up a detailed policy for using ChatGPT “lookalikes”. The verdict? All use, clinical or otherwise, needs a regulation roadmap. And if anyone’s thinking about using these services for decision-making, remember, with great AI power comes great liability.

Then there’s Sunil Dadlani of Atlantic Health System. For him, before ChatGPT and its ilk become household names, CIOs need a game plan. Understanding the regulatory lay of the land is key, especially when data security rules like HIPAA and GDPR enter the chat. And remember, don’t try building the car while driving it – have your policies and guidelines ready to roll. Education is also crucial. The troops need to be briefed on the capabilities and risks of these tech whiz kids.

Last but not least, we have Paul Conocenti from Montage Health. They’re keeping an eye on ChatGPT, cautiously optimistic but equally wary of potential misuse and inaccuracies. Before any new tech kid moves into their playground, they make sure it’s checked for accuracy and security compliance. And guess what? ChatGPT isn’t getting a free pass.

So, there you have it. AI, specifically ChatGPT, is like that shiny new toy that everyone wants to play with. But remember, even toys come with safety instructions.
