“Conversational Context” refers to the surrounding information, including the preceding dialogue and the situation in which the conversation is taking place, that helps determine the meaning of a statement within a conversation.
Understanding the conversational context is crucial in any dialogue because it allows the participants, be they humans or AI, to follow the flow of the conversation, recall past statements, and respond appropriately. It enables us to interpret ambiguous statements, resolve pronouns (like ‘he’, ‘she’, ‘it’), and understand indirect responses or implied meanings.
For example, consider this short dialogue:
Person A: “How was the movie?”
Person B: “It was pretty long.”
In this example, Person B’s response relies on the conversational context established by Person A’s question. Without that context, “It was pretty long” wouldn’t make much sense. But with the context, we understand that Person B is talking about the length of the movie.
For AI and chatbots, understanding conversational context is a significant challenge. They need to keep track of the conversation, understand the relationships between different parts of the dialogue, and often, they also need to understand external context, like the time of day or the user’s previous interactions with the system. Advances in AI and natural language processing have made great strides in this area, but fully understanding conversational context in the way humans do is still an ongoing research problem.
